The River East Emerging Leaders is teamed up with Greater DC Cares Servathon 2009 in late spring for a service event to restore one of River East’s most beautiful public spaces – Oxon Run Park.
The service project was an outlet for area residents looking for a direct way to impact the environment of their neighborhoods. It was also be an opportunity to meet other River East residents and r.e.e.l. steering committee members.
“Community service projects such as this clean up, illustrates one of the key ways r.e.e.l. wants to impact our community,” said Kimberly Morton, steering committee member and a leader of the effort. We came out in big numbers to send a clear message that River East residents care just as much as anyone else about the cleanliness of their neighborhood parks.
Partnering up with Greater DC Cares, which has over two decades of experience coordinating service projects in River East, was a key to organizing the effort. The group brought extra volunteers, supplies and equipment that helped make clean up event a success.
“We were delighted to have r.e.e.l. join Servathon this year as a volunteer team serving at one of our sixty-five projects,” said Dr. Madye Henson, president and CEO of Greater DC Cares. “It is great to see organizations and volunteers come together and make such a huge difference in the community in the span of a few hours.”
