Nearly 80 residents and business owners crowded into a conference room at the THEARC's community center on August 5th, to learn more about the emerging field of green jobs and technology.
The session titled "What Is A Green Job", sponsored jointly by r.e.e.l. and Reclamation Energy, LLC, hosted a panel of experts from the DC Office of Planning, the Dept. of Employment Services, the U.S. EPA, Ward 8 Workforce Council and the Sierra Club to explore available opportunities for training, employment and entrepreneurship in the local "Green" economy.
The event brought a new level of definition to the often cited but rarely understood "Green Job" phenomenon, and emphasized the ongoing work needed to connect local "main streets" to plans for sustained economic growth included within American Recovery and Reinvestment Act 2009 (Stimulus Package) and related initiatives at the municipal level in the District.
To highlight the existing local Green business capacity, the session was catered with locally grown foods presented by Platinum Catering, Inc and Inspire Youth Development, and also included an efficient LED lighting demonstration by V&W Electric, based in Ward 8. "What Is A Green Job" is one of the first programs of its type to bring residents and businesses from "River-East" (wards 7 and 8) together with agency leads for a nuts and bolts explanation of the "Green" economy.
The next event is a "Green Ideas" roundtable luncheon scheduled for August 28th at the Shell Hydrogen Visitor's Center at 3355 Benning Road, N.E. For questions or more information, contact Reclamation Energy at
